Dr. Gugu Ngubane is a medical doctor who has vast clinical experience mainly in Anaesthetics, Trauma, Obstetric Care and Intensive Care who has worked in some of the major public hospitals in KZN. She also has an admirable professional reputation and experience in the field of Public Health as it relates to policy development, policy reviews, Health Programme Management and leadership, and health system strengthening with special interest in quality improvement and the integration of HIV and AIDS care in Maternal and Child Health services.
Dr. Ngubane has worked in the provincial and national head offices of health and the Office of the Premier, giving her added advantage to better understanding the health system, government agenda and the role of communities and the civil society sector with regards to health in South Africa. She has worked with Development partners such as the UK Department for International Development (DFID), USAID, CDC, Global Fund, etc. who are providing development aid and donor funding to strengthen the South African response to the scourge of the AIDS epidemic and the alarmingly increasing burden of disease in this country.
She has held positions of Medical Manager in a District Hospital, Country Project Manager and Provincial Deputy Programme Manager for a priority programme to Prevent Mother to Child Transmission of HIV (PMTCT) in SA, before becoming a consultant as a Technical Advisor to the Office of the Premier on an integrated and coordinated response to the HIV and AIDS epidemic in the KZN and providing technical support to a variety of programmes and projects in the National Health Ministry including PMTCT and the proposed National Health Insurance (NHI). Dr. Ngubane has a passion for educational development, community knowledge empowerment, community and individual ownership and participation in the healthy lives for all agenda and believes in mentoring and coaching.
